The Importance of Making things Beautiful

Architect owner of Yorkville Design Centre, Thomas Tampold, sometimes tells his clients, "It doesn't matter whether it works as long as it's beautiful!" What Thomas really means by this radical view, is that if the primary interest in design is in preconceived notions about how things normally work, you will be unable to recognize the optimal solution to designing your space.  When the focus is instead on making things beautiful, a new way of understanding how things work becomes realized.  When beauty is the focus, the discussion can be about the beauty of how a space works.  What happens then with a kitchen, for example, is it is so beautifully designed everyone that wants to be spend time in it, bringing the family together in a positive way.  In other words, concentrating on the beauty of the space makes things work in a more positive way than if you directly design things to work, leaving beauty as an afterthought.  YDC always looks to what is beautiful in creating function.  The forms that are realized follow from that.
